IRS COVID TAX TIP 2020-42:

Read about IRS warnings to tax payers during the COVID-19 pandemic.


The IRS warned that taxpayers should be especially mindful at this time for COVID-19 related phishing and scamming schemes in relation to the Economic Impact Payments. These scams can result in fraud and identity theft.

Below are strategies scammers may use and actions you should take to prevent fraud and identity theft.

Scam Attempt #1: You receive a phone call or text message from someone claiming to work for the IRS wanting to verify or request personal or banking information.

Action: Do not respond to the text message or answer with any personal or financial information.Delete message and hang up the phone as the IRS will never call or text you.

Scam Attempt #2: You receive an email from a link that looks like the IRS sent it. It may contain a link or attachment asking you to click on to provide or verify information.

Action: Do not open any unexpected emails. If you open it, do not click on the links or open the attachments. Do not respond with any personal or financial information and forward suspicious emails to phishing@irs.gov then delete the email.
